Thai Pongal 2026

Updated: Feb 8

Hatfield Tamil School recently celebrated the Tamil harvest festival, Thai Pongal, at the Hatfield Breaks Manor Community Centre. The event brought together around 100 attendees, including students, families and members of the local community, to celebrate Tamil culture and traditions.

We were honoured to welcome several special guests to the celebration, including Hatfield Mayor Mick Wise and his wife Sandra Wise, Hatfield Central Councillor Pankit Shah and his wife Vaishali, and Welwyn Hatfield Community Fund trustees Chris Andrews and Cherie Wiper. Their presence showed strong support for cultural and community initiatives.

Students showcased their talents through Bharatanatyam dance, Indian classical music, Tamil songs, speeches and Parai drumming. These performances reflected the weekly learning that takes place at the school under the guidance of Mrs Santhiramohan and the dedicated volunteer teachers.

A highlight of the day was the presentation of trophies and medals by the Mayor, recognising the commitment of students and teachers in promoting the Tamil language and culture.

The Thai Pongal celebration was a meaningful event that highlighted gratitude for nature and the harvest, while celebrating unity, cultural pride and the importance of preserving Tamil heritage.
